Lizenzbedingungen für Patente, die als fair, vernünftig und diskrminierungsfrei gelten, werden FRAND genannt (Fair, Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory)

Vor allem durch eine im Vorfeld festgelegte Gebührenregelung sind alle Teilnehmer gegen spätere, unkalkulierbare Forderungen abgesichert. Als Vorzeige-Beispiel gilt das Modell der einheitlichen Gebührenregelung bei Mobilfunkstandards(z. B. bei GSM und UMTS).
